Stuart is a dual qualified solicitor of England and Wales and Gibraltar. He read law at Kingston University and completed the Legal Practice Course (LPC) at Northumbria University, followed by the Professional Skills Course (PSC) at BBP University London.
Stuart commenced his professional career in 2010 at Grant Thornton where he last held the position of Tax Manager, and joined ISOLAS in 2016 following a successful secondment.
From 2019 to 2023, Stuart was as a member of the Business Licensing Authority (BLA), having been appointed by the Government. The BLA formed part of the Office of Trading (OFT) and was responsible for the issue, renewal and administration of business licenses in Gibraltar. The role of the BLA, in conjunction with the Consumer Protection Division of the OFT, was to ensure a level playing field between businesses for the ultimate benefit of consumers and the local economy.
In 2023, following the introduction of the new Fair Trading Act 2023, Stuart was appointed as a member of the Decision Making Committee (DMC) of the OFT. The functions of the DMC are to exercise, on behalf of the OFT, the OFT’s powers in respect of specified decisions and to hear and consider appeals from any decision made by the OFT.
Stuart is a guest lecturer at the University of Gibraltar for Business Licensing & Consumer Rights, which is delivered as part of the Professional Certificate of Competence in Gibraltar Law.
With over 14 years of experience in navigating complex tax laws and regulations, Stuart has become the “go to” lawyer within the firm for all tax matters. Stuart provides strategic tax planning and advisory services to individuals, businesses and organisations, helping them optimise their tax positions while staying compliant with the ever-evolving tax landscape.
Stuart has extensive experience in advising high net worth individuals on the establishment of tax efficient structures and cross-border planning. He regularly counsels clients on setting up businesses in Gibraltar including corporate, tax and regulatory aspects concerning the company’s business, as well as assisting individuals relocating to Gibraltar; dealing with their residency and all other aspects of relocation, including Category 2 (Cat 2) and High Executive Possessing Specialist Skills (HEPSS) applications.
Stuart is recognised for his expertise in Tax and is ranked as a “Next Generation Partner” in Tax by the Legal 500.
Stuart is often called upon by the firm to assist on a wide range of tax matters, including corporate taxation, international tax planning and assists clients to develop tailored tax strategies that align with their goals and mitigate potential risks and frequently advises clients on the Gibraltar regulations relating to the Foreign Accounts Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) and the Common Reporting Standards (CRS).
Stuart presents on tax issues affecting the jurisdiction and has also co-authored a number of prominent industry publications, including the Gibraltar chapter of the Legal 500 Tax Country Comparative Guide, the Chambers & Partners Doing Business in Gibraltar Guide, the Chambers & Partners Corporate Tax Guide and the International Legal Guides (ICGL) Private Client Laws and Regulations.
Stuart also works closely with the ISOLAS Financial Services team, and has acted for many high-profile clients in assisting with the application process for Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) Providers, as well as a number of DLT related projects including successful applications with the GFSC under the VASP registration framework.
Stuart is a member of the Crypto Tax Forum, which is a community of tax, legal and finance professional who deal with crypto assets.
Stuart is very active in the private client and family office space, regularly advising high net worth individuals and families on a wide array of matters, including tax, wealth and succession planning. Stuart specialises in providing strategic counsel and personalised solutions to meet the unique needs and aspirations of clients. He is dedicated to understanding the intricate financial landscape and familial dynamics that characterise affluent households.
Stuart is the trusted advisor to various family offices, and acts as the protector to a private family trust and director to various family owned investment holding companies.
Over the years Stuart has also helped develop the firm’s sports law practice and has acted for many of the local football clubs in a wide array of matters. Stuart has also acted for potential owners, including former Real Madrid footballer Michel Salgado.
