Meet James's team

James graduated from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne with a Law degree in 2018. He then attended BPP University Law School in Manchester where he undertook the Bar Professional Training Course. James was called to the Bar of England and Wales by the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple in 2019 and was admitted as a Barrister of the Supreme Court of Gibraltar in 2020.

James commenced his training contract with ISOLAS in September 2019 where he undertook seats in Litigation, Private Client, and Corporate/Commercial law. In September 2020 James returned to the Litigation department in order to assist and work alongside Partner James Montado.

James has been involved in a wide range of contentious matters particularly in the areas of Trust Litigation and Insolvency. James is also involved in non-contentious financial services matters.

James largely assists Partner James Montado with his civil and commercial litigation practice. As a result, James has been involved in disputes across various sectors and industries. James regularly advises clients on matters relating to the recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments, injunctive relief and other interim applications.

James also advises clients on contentious matters and disputes arising from the use of cryptocurrency/Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) and as a result has assisted clients with fraud/asset tracing claims in respect of Initial Coin Offerings (ICO’s).

Notable cases:
Mansion & Anor v Karel Christian Manasco & Anor 2022/ORD/074 – acting as second junior to James Montado and Hodge Malek KC in respect of a £5 million freezing injunction.

James has a wide insolvency practice and regularly advises and represents clients in relation to debt-recovery matters. James has also advised liquidators and administrators on regulatory matters arising from insolvency proceedings.

James has also advised directors and liquidators of DLT Companies on their respective duties and potential liability when entering into insolvency proceedings.

Notable cases:
In the matter of Samir Investments Limited 2022/Comp/013 – acting as junior to James Montado in an application by the liquidator for directions on the distribution of company assets in a members voluntary liquidation where there was a dissenting joint shareholder.

James has advised clients ranging from sole traders to large multi-national institutions, financial institutions and licensed DLT entities on Data Protection matters. James regularly advises Clients on complex Data Subject Access Requests (DSARs), handling data breaches and other matters relating to the Gibraltar General Data Protection Regulation Requirements.

James is developing an extensive practice in financial services matters where he regularly advises banking institutions on regulatory and contractual matters. James regularly advises banking entities on their requirements under PAR, PSD II, CRD and WTR.

James has additionally advised banking institutions in Gibraltar on their obligations and duties under the VISA rules.
James is presently assisting a number of investment service providers with their applications for regulatory (MiFID) permissions, as well as independent audits of their compliance and policy frameworks.
